Beat the Heat: Summer Boating Tips

summer boating

Before you get out on the water this summer, learn how to make your boating trip as safe and comfortable as possible. You care about protecting your family — that’s why you spent time and money getting the best OC boat insurance. Extreme heat can be dangerous for anyone, and although preventable, heat-related illness kills more than 600 people every year in the United States. Learning the facts and taking a few simple precautions can keep you boating safely all summer long.

Plan for Safety

A little preparation goes a long way to maximize comfort and safety while boating. Take the time to plan your outing and equip your boat to improve safety in the heat. You’ll have a more enjoyable trip if you:

  • Stick to the coolest parts of the day for boating, generally before 11 a.m. and after 4 p.m. A common misconception is that the danger zone is 10 a.m.–2 p.m. While the sun is strongest during these hours, the hottest time of day is actually around 3 p.m.
  • Head to a location where you can take a cooling dip or take a break in the shade.
  • Travel with a relative or friend and watch each other for the signs of heat-related illness. Symptoms include muscle spasms, heavy sweating, nausea, headache, weakness and disorientation; the best response is to call 911.
  • Equip your boat with cooling features such as a portable shade, fan or mister and a cooler stocked with ice packs, water and sports drinks.

Keep Cool While Boating

You should also take precautions to beat the heat when out on the water. While cruising, air movement will help keep you comfortable, but your body still needs protection against sunburn and dehydration. While your OC boat insurance is ready to protect your vessel, you’re in charge of keeping your friends and family safe. Make sure to:

  • Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water — one quart per hour — and keep alcohol and caffeine to a minimum.
  • Wear sunglasses and a hat to protect your eyes from UV rays and minimize glare.
  • Apply a 30 SPF sunscreen throughout the day, starting 20 minutes before heading out — even when cloudy.
  • Protect your body with light, loose-fitting, protective clothing and sandals or other breathable footwear.

You’re ready to use your boat for a full season of water sports, fishing and relaxing. Enjoying fun in the sun can be risky when the temperature gets dangerously hot, though. Now that you know how to plan a safe outing and keep cool while boating, you’re can take full advantage of the sunny summer days. With your OC boat insurance and a solid cooling plan, you and your family are fully protected.
