Hurricane Aftermath: Returning to Your Boat

If you’re one of the many people who were displaced during Hurricane Harvey, you might just be getting back on your feet. The aftermath of the storm is nothing short of devastating, and the damage could be colossal to your vessel. While you might be rushing to size up the damage, it’s important to take extra precaution so that you don’t suffer a casualty yourself. In this article, we’re going to explore how to safely navigate a damaged boat. Most importantly, this is the time to review your Boat Insurance policy.

Remove valuable items.

Ideally, you removed these items before the storm hit. But, with Hurricane Harvey and Irma back to back, there hasn’t been a lot of time to prepare. If the boat washed ashore, remove valuables that could potentially be looted or vandalized. If the boat is not on even ground, or is stacked up with others, do not attempt to board it for any reason.

Seal it up.

If your boat has broken windows, seal it up with tarps to prevent additional weather damage. As soon as possible, start drying the boat out, either by taking advantage of sunny weather or using electric air handlers. All wet materials such as cushions must be removed and saved for a potential insurance claim. The storm may be gone, but the clock could be ticking on mold growth, says Practical Sailor.

“Pickle” your motor.

If your engine or other mechanical parts are waterlogged, a “pickling” can get them up and running again. Flush out the engine with fresh water and then fill it with diesel fuel or kerosene.

Most importantly, take extra caution with everything you do. You can never be sure what type of electrical dangers your boat possesses after a storm, not to mention displaced animals, broken planks and sharp edges, uneven surfaces and more.

If your boat is a complete loss, be sure to consult with your insurance company before signing over the title to salvage.
